the end of the world.

The year 2012 is coming to a close and that means it's Christmas card season! One of my favorite things to do this time of year is sift through all the Christmas card's/letters at my mom's house-see all the pictures and hear all the stories of how everyone has spent their year. Well seeing as I'm not a wife and mother it'd be a little awkward for me to send out Christmas card's, but if I was to write one it'd go a little something like this...

Feliz Navidad Family and Friends!
We find ourselves at the end and this estimated end of the world has treated me far beyond my expectations! 2012 has been the best year yet and as I look back the biggest word that comes to mind is ADVENTURE!

2012 started on the wrong foot as January was the worst month and made me want to quit my job! I began to learn a lot about life and realized some people just aren't what they seem-therefore major changes in the social circle were made and I moved on to bigger and better things!

I finally began to see the world more this year-starting with Texas in March. Besties 2012 was a trip of a lifetime as 3 best friends and Kyle took Houston by storm! I'd have to say crossing the Houston Rodeo off my bucket list was my favorite, while the vietmanese food was not. Many memories were made as we embarked on multiple adventures that trip.

The week I returned home from Texas I met a boy....not just any boy mind you. I met the Hud man aka The Hudson Hornet, aka Russell Hudson. A mutual friend that I worked with at Provo set us up and let's just say she knew what she was doing. Between our busy schedules we found some time to hang out and talk up the updates aka lift I was doing to my truck, but it felt like forever until we went on our adventurous first date. Due to some mutual confusion it leads us to a pause in this part of my story...
I moved out of my "condo" at the first of April into a darling townhome with a co-worker. I bought a huge bed that I actually fit in and lifted my truck along with some other touch-ups for the ol Hanky Panky.

And then the 2012 traveling train took me to Tennessee!!
My mom and dad, Tanner and I traveled to Marysvale! Toured the neighboring cities then ventured to Nashville where I was able to cross another thing off my bucket list: Visit the Grand Ol' Opry!! and yes it's just amazing and full of country music spirit as you imagine it is! Other adventures included zip line tours, cruising around the rocky mountains, music row and the country music hall of fame, nashville zoo, and visiting neighboring tourist towns like Gatlinburg! It was an amazing trip that ended to soon findng us back in the 801.

We may now return to the Hud man story: after some mutual friends intervene and clear up the confusion we began dating in May! The summer of 2012 was filled with so many adventures and fun times with this boy.

One of the biggest adventures the summer brought was my first deer hunt experience! Russ had drawn for the bookcliffs archery hunt and I took a week off to tag along. I ended up having to help pack out the deer just the two of us from the bottom of a canyon. I learned a lot from that deer hunt and the hunting extravaganza continued over to another deer hunt, then grouse, duck, and elk hunting! my man loves hunting can ya tell : )

Mixed in with the summer hunting adventures I also celebrated the 4th of july, turned 24, and kezy who's suddenly a little adult turned 3.I also got the AMAZING news that my sister is pregnant again which means 2013 will bring the joy of a new niece or nephew to my life. I'm so excited I can't wait!

I ventured into a new adventure the first of October as I quit my first nursing job at Provo and became a real big girl hospital nurse! It's been the biggest change (for the good), and I'm learning a lot! I'm so grateful for how it's worked out and the lives that have already effected me because of it. Not to forget another benefit is now working with my BFF brookie!
A novemeber highlight of the year was when I got to FINALLY attend an Eric Church concert! It turned out to be quite the adventure with Kip and Justin Moore also performing. I was in heaven, such a fun concert!!

Thanksgiving was spent with the Garlick clan in Sanpete! Us Olsens took off to the moutainside before the dinner to shoot off some pumpkins and clay pidgeons.

Which leads me to December-Jax has now turned 2 and I feel my niece and nephew are officially smarter than me! However, they never fail to make me smile and always remind me what's important in life.

As 2012 comes to a close I find myself being grateful. Grateful for: the amazing year and all I've been blessed to experience, my family, Russ, my friends, a great job, a roof over my head etc...
Happy Holidays!! Love Britt

be grateful

It's quite strange to me that I haven't posted any grateful for posts or even mentioned Thanksgiving because it was fantastic, but then I think about busy life and work these days and I remember why I haven't. However, here it because I can't afford to not express some serious gratitude these days.

I'm grateful for life, for my life, although sometimes crazy I'm so lucky to have it. I've had an experience lately which has reminded me how much I take it for granted and how it can be lost without notice. I'm grateful for where my life has lead me, and the many adventures I've been on.

I'm grateful for the amazing people that I get to share my life with like my amazing family! Seriously I'm so lucky to have the family I have and for the fact that they are always there for me. Not to mention the fact that I have the cutest niece and nephew ever!! They never fail to make my day and I can't wait to meet the third little one in March : )

I'm grateful for Russ. As I think back to months and months ago I never would have thought I'd be so lucky to have someone like him, and now I don't know what I'd do without him! I'm grateful for someone who loves me for me, makes me laugh, and keeps me loving life and looking for the positive. Let's just say he balances out this worry wart quite well : )

As I was driving through Walmart parking lot last night I saw a girl walking with a slight limp, handful of groceries, and only a hooded zip up sweater. She wasn't walking to a car, just kept walking home I imagine. I was reminded of even more things I'm grateful for, such as my carhartt, my truck, etc.. but I'm also grateful to have a good job in a time where they are so hard to come by and that I'm able to provide for myself.

There are many other things I could keep going on and on... but I'll end on the note that I'm truly grateful for how blessed I am. I had a great Thanksgiving weekend celebrating the holiday and now that it's back to work I'm focusing on the little things in life to be grateful for that make each day great!!

Deer Hunt 2012

I had my first deer hunt experience this year. Russ drew his tag to the Bookcliffs-an area down by Vernal/Roosevelt area(but big enough it extends clear over to grand junction), that he's been hunting and camping in for years. We had already started dating when he got his tag and I remember how excited he was as he had been waiting for over 2 years to get this tag. The process continued as I was with him through all the truck drama, hunting prep etc.. We went on 2 scouting trips-one back in July and the other the week before the hunt to go find a camp and leave the trailer. It was a whole new experience. Just the scouting trips alone were a process-waking up at 5:00AM to go look for deer for hours. Then return to camp for a short rest period before back on the wheeler for another 4+ hours of scouting. Thank goodness I like hanging out with that crazy man a lot because it wouldn't have been fun without him.

did I mention the scouting trips included target practice?? : )

The morning before the hunt opened we(as in me and 8 guys) met at Russ's house, loaded the 4-wheelers and made the trek out to the Bookcliffs. 5-6 hours later we had camp set up and were out to start scouting out the area we'd go find the big buck the next day. And thus began the adventure...

Saturday we helped a stranger try to track his deer he'd shot but the blood trail ended and we never found his deer. That night Russ shot one and we had the same experience-searched that night while it was dark and returned the next morning to find the blood trail ending with no deer. In theory both these deer could have bedded down in the time that was in between kill shot time to tracking time but got back up which clotted off their blood trail allowing them to get away. Russ felt horrible about knowing he'd had a good shot and that the deer was probably bleeding internally and would die. So the boys hiked around and down to the bottom of the canyon for a few more hours before we gave up on finding him.
Sunday afternoon Luke and his family headed home leaving just the 4 of us out there in the ol' Bookcliffs. Monday morning while out scouting another hunter on a 4-wheeler came up to us asking if we were stalking a deer-Russ responding no lead them to asking " do you want to?"
We then followed him over to a campsite and drove down to the side of the mountain where his buddy was watching something through his binoculars. That was the first time we spotted Russ's deer as they were showing us the nice 4 point ant 3 point bucks up on the mountain. After deciding they were shooter bucks we thanked the elk hunters and went to 4-wheel up to the ridge they'd been on there but as we got close the bucks were no where to be seen. We carried on and continue to hunt.

Tuesday afternoon we said goodbye to Tyson and Mark(Russ's dad) as they headed back home to go back to work. Leaving just Russ and myself on the hunt. I got a much needed hair wash that day as I make shifted a shower off the back of Russ's truck. That was just what I needed to rejuvenate me!
Right as we were ready to get back out there and hunt that afternoon the weather picked up and we got some of the rain that had been lingering threatening to drop. Thank goodness my boy is prepared because with his rain suit I stayed nice and dry!

Russ had seen plenty of bucks while we'd been out there and could have taken shots at some but had decided on every one of  them that he could do better. That same thing happened Tuesday night as right before dark he debated shooting a buck that happened to be right off the side of the road.
Wednesday morning we woke up at the crack of dawn like normal and took off in the truck. Russ saw a shooter buck up on a ridge-one that we hadn't seen yet on the trip, but it was in a tricky spot and he was unable to get up to him good enough to stalk out a shot (keep in mind this is bow hunting not rifle hunting so you have to get A LOT closer). We continued down the road and as we pulled into that familiar camp spot from Monday I glanced over with my expert spotting skills and spotted that same 4 point and 3 point bucks. Russ immediately took off on foot and walked over to the 4-wheeler ridge and began to stalk out his deer. I stayed at the campsite and watched from afar. He came back a little later all sorts of excited that he had shot it!! but nervous about what had happened Saturday we went back to camp to eat breakfast and give him a few hours to bleed, bed down, and die. We brought the truck back, left it on the 4-wheeler trail up on the ridge. We had already seen 2 bears out there that trip so I was packing the pistol while tracking a bleeding animal just in case we needed to fight : )

And thus the insane adventure began-we started hiking tracking the blood trail and I felt like a detective as we tried to follow tracks and predict movements to get to the next blood spot. That deer sure took us on a trip and a half! We finally started getting in to the trees where we thought at anytime we'd find him bedded down dead. Wrong! we found tons of blood in the trees but at one real bloody mess spot we realized that he may have clotted off after all this time because we couldn't find anymore blood. Needless to say that the leaves had started to fall at this time of year so all the red leaves and flower/plant pedals on the ground weren't helping. I stayed put on the last blood while Russ continued out to do another lap to make sure we hadn't missed anything-and as I sat there I started to think about Russ's best friend Rob. Rob died in January and while I never met him I know the kind of person he is just by the stories. They were best friends and each other's hunting buddies. I felt bad that Rob couldn't be there and knew that if Rob was there he'd be much better help than I was! I remember being so tired and looking up at the storm clouds rolling in thinking "Rob if we don't find him soon we aren't gonna find him! So help us out instead of teasing us by leading the deer on a wild goose chase!"
Pretty soon I hear Russ come almost running back towards me saying "I found more blood!" The next blood was a good few yards away so I was grateful that we found it because once we did the blood got more consistent again. We noticed that the blood was getting more fresh so thinking that we'd jumped him somewhere we hung back a little bit but when the storm clouds started to get closer we continued on. Not long after we turned a corner when I saw him move up ahead. I motioned to Russ and he moved forward to get another shot-taking the only one he'd give him even if it wasn't a good one. The buck disappeared and so I stayed put so we'd know where he'd shot him from and Russ trekked over to find his arrow. Next thing I know this darn buck is running right at me! he stops about 10 yards away in what I swear was the most intense staring contest I'd ever been in, looking into an injured deers eyes! as soon as he made any movement I jumped out of the way, just in case, but thankfully he went downhill. Russ had seen him and took off to follow him, and once my legs stopped shaking I did the same.

To shorten the story the story ends with one dead buck. I watched from afar as Russ was afraid he'd jump up at me again, but we were both so excited when he stopped moving and we could finally celebrate!! The excitement dwindled a little when we realized he had landed about 20 yards from the bottom of a canyon-a canyon that had no road at the bottom meaning we were gonna have to pack him out : ( But the best part was as soon as Russ called me down saying he was dead the rain came! Call me crazy but you could feel that we weren't alone on that mountain and I could feel the presence of someone that's really special to Russ, especially as that rain fell! Rob had helped us out after all : )
Photoshoot began followed by an intense gutting and cutting process. The hike out was gruesome as we hiked straight up packing pounds of meat on our backs and in our arms. but we made it in one trip! The worst part was that we hadn't taken the 4-wheeler so once we made it out of the canyon we still had to walk the ridge on the trail way back to the truck. Needless to say we were very tired, and very sore, but very proud as we drove back to camp with antlers sticking out of the back of the truck!!

The next morning after a much needed rest we packed up camp and drove home, once again proudly displaying the horns in the bed of the truck : ) Thanks for the adventures Russ!!!

never grow up

being a grown up entails LOTS of big decisions to make. I was used to making lots of decisions as a student but it seems now that what I decide to do with my life suddenly has a huge impact. Well I've been reminded lately that I really am not fully in charge of these decisions after all seeing as how someone else knows best. let me explain.

Working as a Rehab nurse for over a year now had started to take it's toll and I was fighting back feelings of wanting to retire from exhaustion when I realized that it was finally time to start applying for other jobs justifying that the pay cut I take to go anywhere else will be worth it. I didn't take it too seriously turned in about 3 applications online and just went about life. Well I watched a few more nurses at my work get other jobs and as I found myself still surrounded by craziness at work and a continuing "rough" situation with my new boss I was inspired to try harder.

On September 3 I received a text from a fellow nurse who worked two jobs-one being a day school nurse for a one-to-one patient and the other working long term at Provo. She asked if I was interested in taking over her day job as she is pregnant and currently unable to do it anymore. Immediately I focused in on the glorified no weekends, no holidays, and being on the same schedule as Russ during the week. PERFECT!! well the more the ball started to get rolling with the idea the more I started to doubt it. I couldn't let myself get fully excited about it and as more info came about I began to realize it may not be right. Thank goodness for a good friend Joni who helped me lay it all out focusing on the fact that I would lose the opportunity to assess, perform certain skills, and interact with co-workers and doctors as a nurse. I realized in that moment that I would not be progressing and so as I stared at the application online(the last real step I had to do before they would have oriented me) I logged off. Frustrated that I still needed to find an out I applied to a a couple job postings online at 2 different hospitals.

Friday September 7: I was driving around with Channy on one of her breaks for school when my phone went off with an unknown number. She recognized it as Utah Valley Regional hospital but it hung up before I answered it. About a half hour later the number called again and this time as I was freaking out and Channy made me answer it I soon was offered the opportunity to come in and interview the following Tuesday for a position I'd applied for. HOLY MOLY was I freaking out. It was going to be a group interview that I had to present/teach for 2-3 mins. I'd never had a hospital interview before and I started to tear up and almost throw up I just wanted to scream!!!

2 hours later as I'm retelling my nerve wrecking experience to Jacqui outside her house I get another phone call from an unknown number. not thinking about it I check my voicemail a little later on my way home to hear that it was Director of Nursing at Timpanogos Hospital and she wanted to set up an interview time for me sometime next week. HOLY MOLY!!! if one phone call wasn't enough now there was 2??!! Instant reminder that I'm not in control, seeing as how I'd just turned down a job potential 4 days prior.

I lived to tell about the interviews and by friday I was a whole 10 pounds lighter as I began the waiting period to hear back. I waited a week before e-mailing Timpanogos and getting an immediate response that night to call her the next day as they would love to have me come work with them. I jumped up and down-spread the good news and the next day called my new boss as we discussed where I would go from here to get going. (For the record I did hear back from Utah Valley and was considered for the position but since My boss at provo hadn't called them back or returned messages I received the call to late as I had already accepted Timp.)

Anywho, point of this mumbo jumbo is that I have a new job!! I'll be working in as hospital, doing real hard core nurse skills!! I'm sooooooooooo scared it's crazy. I feel like I'm in a whirlwind. But amidst all the craziness of being new again and having to learn and learn and learn and learn I'm trying to focus on the excitement of getting what I've wanted for a long time. I'll be in several different floors of the hospital so I'll get a lot of experience and meet tons of people.

However, with change comes the bitter sweetness of goodbye. I worked my last shift at Provo Monday night and as I went to leave the facility and aides began to hug me goodbye I almost cried. I was leaving behind my work family that we as night shift had become. I walked the halls one last time to the break room to clock out where I had walked hundreds of times, in a place where I had learned so many things. I was walking out with someone who had become a big brother figure to me-who as a respiratory therapist has taught me not only about being a good nurse but has been there for me as a listening ear and given much needed advice on life. As he threatened me that I better stay in touch I got in my truck and we went our separate ways. I thought about the unknown ahead and right then as I looked in my rear view at Provo and teared up that something so familiar will be no more.

Thank you to all the great people who have supported me through so many hard times over this adventure of learning who I am as a nurse. For the friends I've gained, and experiences I've had it's been a ride. So here's to growing up! Out with the old and in with the new!! So long Provo and here I come Timp!

To draw comfort on such a foreign future I think I'll focus on this "Find Joy in the Journey!"

just because

I get a lot of surprises/surprise visits at work, just because...

rewind and backtrack

Back in July I had a birthday. Somehow I've failed to mention the fact that I'm a year older and not much wiser but the turning of a year includes a story worth mentioning
.
My birthday was on a Monday this year and Russ had told me that he wanted to take me out for my birthday but since he was going to have to work Monday we decided on Saturday. Well Saturday came and he went scuba diving up at strawberry res to catch crawdad's(??) with his buddies. He had said he should be home in time to still go out but we decided on about 7 o'clock to be safe. He called me at about 5 saying he had just gotten home and would come pick me up about 7. I had spent the day with my friends-breakfast at Magelby's Fresh, shopping etc... so I was ready when he came and got me.

We begin driving discussing where we wanted to eat etc... (currently he was in between trucks after recently selling his so we were driving in his friend Cody's truck). his phone went off and he starts talking to his buddy Luke about how he'd have to go tow this truck down from Taylorsville. Bummed I agreed to go with him and tried not to let him see how disappointed I was our date got rain checked. We discuss having to go get Luke's truck to tow and he says I have to go to my house first. Not really thinking about it we head to his house.

We unusually enter through the front door instead of the garage, to which he says "I've been using my front door a lot more lately". Worked for me. As we get in the house he disappears into his room and as he goes down the hallways asks me to feed his dogs real quick. I love his dogs and help feed them a lot so I head out into the garage but as I open the back door I hear "Surprise!!!" and I shockingly stare back to a patio full of our mutual friends!! I didn't know what to do honestly, I was kinda embarrassed but SO happy at the same time. He came outside to join the party grinning ear to ear. It was a blast! We had a BBQ, hung out, drove around in Ben's old fashioned sports car, and ate delicious cake that Jessi had made(my favorite candy is sour gummy worms).

It was quite the surprise and a fabulous night :) thanks again babe!!!

L.A.I.K.I

Life. As. I. Know. It.
it's pretty crazy these days. I feel like I'm spinning a million miles a minute and as I sit to try to sort out emotions and thoughts it's still all one big jumble.

let's start with work. INSANE! there was a month that I refer to as hell but it's real name is January and I hated it. well lately work feels like I'm back in January and I live for days off and suffer through days on. Needless to say the time has come that despite the pay cut and despite the dread of being the new girl again I'm going to start looking for another job. There's just a few extra things in consideration these days : ) However, despite the craziness I've gotten to a part of nursing where I feel I can finally look back over the last year and realize I've grown. And for a good news minute I hadn't started an IV in quite a while and last week got one I had to start on the first try, then last night I went to start one for another nurse and BAM! right on the first try again. both hard sticks.

baby girl kez is now 3 years old!! man I love that little girl, I love jax man too but can't believe 3 years has gone by since I became a lil auntie and began to hang out with the coolest kids ever! I'm so grateful to have little reminders around about what life's really about and they never fail to make you smile. crazy how time flies.

Olympics. due to the fact that I work nights I don't see much TV action during the day but I've made a habit of sticking the news on in the day room at work and watching the re-runs and interviews of all the athletes. Besides making me wanna get a gym pass the Olympics makes me wanna be a part of something and impact peoples lives. Not that I'm gonna be signing up for team USA anytime soon but I sure do love watching all these countries get together and compete.

Russ. He continues to be amazing and I'm such a lucky girl. That pretty much sums it up so we'll leave it at that : )

August. Summer always flies but I feel this one flew exceptionally fast! I'm so grateful for the fun memories but I haven't given up on it yet and plan on enjoying my shorts and sunshine down to the last minute. Russ has a hunt coming up in 2 weeks that I'm going to go with on and experience my first hunting adventure. I'm a little nervous to head out for a week 5 hours away but I'm excited and am celebrating my excitement with buying some awesome supplies for the hunt.

summa 2012

Summertime is HERE!!! well I guess it's been here for a while, but I love it! There's many reasons that make summertime the best season ever, but the biggest and most broad is that there's so much you can do! I've been taking full advantage of this : )

Way back in May Russ and I went to Eagle Mountain Pony Express days with his dad and (then fiance) Tracy. Despite the wind it was a blast and a great way to kick off rodeo season aka summer!
Even with the crappy weather over Memorial day weekend we still found time to plant the garden down at the grandparents house as well as play around down on dad's farm. Also over Memorial weekend we found time to go for a drive up in the Uintah's. We ended up finding a neat little spot and the weather had let up for a min so the boys made a fire, we had an over 100+ picture photo shoot with Chris's camera, played with the dogs, shot guns, and then enjoyed the presence of 2 moose! However, as we were heading down the mountain it started SNOWING! but it was a blast.End of May Tanner man aka baby of the fam graduated from high school!'m so proud of him and so excited to see how the University of Utah looks on him come fall. way to go baby bro!!CAMPING!! we went up to Wallsburg and camped overnight but crammed as many things into those 48 hours as possible! Festivities included: shooting guns (I finally shot a shot gun for the first time in my life), played horse shoes, cooked delicious food on the fire, fished, and went on 4- wheeler rides including a day ride where we rode to Daniels Summit Lodge and ate lunch then 4- wheeled back to camp! One of my best friends (along with my second mom) daughter got married in Cedar one weekend so russ and I made the journey down to visit while Cyndi was in Utah for the wedding. It was a blast! I have missed her so much and I also got to see other long lost friends, enjoy time with Russ at Sand Hollow while soaking up some southern utah sun! what's summertime without a lil rodeo?? I wouldn't know because I soak up rodeo season like crazy!! and strawberry days is one of my favorites-this year it didn't fail to please either. Strawberries and cream, rodeo, pro motorcross, fireworks, and concert along with dancing in the dirt afterwards =pretty awesome night!! I love boating, going on drives around town with the windows down or up in the mountains looking for adventure. I love BBQ's and fresh fruit. I love summer and I'm so grateful for the awesome people I'm spending it with! Long live summer ya'll!! : )
